Set Your Trap

The aim is to prevent fruit flies from even coming to your house. However, implementing any strategy takes time and you’ll want to kill any that arrive in the meantime.

Choosing one of these great UV fly electric traps won’t just ensure any flies are killed. It will also help you to identify whether you have a fruit fly issue or not. After all, if none are being killed by the UV trap, there is a good chance you don’t have a fruit fly problem.

Protect your Fruit

It is best to eat your fruit before it becomes overripe and starts attracting the fruit fly. However, you should also cover your fruit, even if it is just a piece of netting. This stops the flies from getting to it and encourages them to go elsewhere. You can buy dedicated domes to cover your fruit with.

Change Your Dishcloths

Dishcloths are one of the dirtiest items in your kitchen because they are used to remove food from plates and, traces of these foods stay on the cloths. These can be detected by the fruit flies and attract them to your home.

To make sure this doesn’t happen replace the dishcloths regularly. If they are re-useable wash them on a hot cycle.

Aromas

Fruit flies love the smell of decaying food but hate the smell of peppermint, lemongrass, lavender, clove, and similar scents. Hang herbs around your house or grow them near the entry points. It will deter the flies from entering, keeping your home fly-free.

Fruit flies won’t come to your home if there is nothing for them to eat or drink. One of the most effective ways of eliminating them is to simply clean all your sides regularly with a disinfectant spray. This removes all traces of food crumbs and any scent that may attract the fruit flies.

If there is nothing to attract them to your home they simply won’t come. There are much better and easier homes for them to target.
