Vibe Design Group were asked to create a dream home for their clients, on a lot that stimulated their imagination and capacity of finding imaginative solutions. Starting from the client’s brief (a family home that could also accommodate their almost adult children, and some guests from time to time), and the site’s unusual shape, the architects created a wonderful 3,520-sq.ft. home with a unique and dynamic architecture. It is located in Melbourne, Australia.

The position of the Tramway Residence allows full views of the north-facing entertainment area towards the landscaped garden and the swimming pool. The client wanted the master bedroom on the lower story, where the primary living spaces were also located, which means that the upper floor is now the children’s territory.  The apartment-style space, dedicated to the family’s international guests, is also located on the upper floor.

The architects drew a little inspiration from the owner’s interest in motorsports (one of the family’s three cars was a racecar), and they decided to try and give the dwelling a dynamic personality. They achieved this by creating a hovering upper story like a “floating sculpture”, and wrapping it in zinc panels. Also a notable characteristic of the Tramway Residence is the fact that it was built “with sustainability always a primary consideration”.
