Whilst it is never recommended that you move heavy furniture on your own, and it is always a smarter idea to have someone help you, this is not always possible. There are then, some rules which are worth bearing in mind when it comes to moving couches, tables or other heavy furniture items on your own, and for your own safety it is important to recognize what they are. Let’s have a look then at how you can go about moving heavy furniture on your own.

Using a Machine

The best course of action here is to use a machine for heavy lifting, such as a small forklift truck. This may seem a little over the top but if you go to somewhere like Mars Forklifts you’ll find that they have many small options which are ideal for such a job. Getting a machine will take out all of the work involved in moving pieces of furniture, leaving you feeling nice and fresh afterwards.

Supporting Yourself

It is highly important that if you are not able to move the furniture using a machine that you keep your muscles supported when you are moving the items. A back support for example is going to be essential here as it will help you to avoid any injury, you could also look at buying some knee supports for the same reasons. Even if you have never had a back or leg injury before, it will be in your best interests to give yourself the right amount of support.

Creating Space

The key to making sure that this goes smoothly is ensuring that you have properly planned and that includes the space around the item. The last thing that you want is to have taken the strain of the item only to realize that you have to make some extra space or pick things up off the floor. Prepare the space first, take a look at the journey which you will have to make and then make sure that the path is clear for you when you are carrying the piece of furniture.

Small Margins

Given that you are doing this on your own it will be important to stop for regular breaks, so don’t try and move the whole thing at once. Take the furniture title y little to its destination, there is no need to rush here.

Realistic

Before you even begin to move the piece of furniture you should be absolutely honest with yourself about whether or not you have the strength and the flexibility to do it. There is absolutely no point in putting yourself at risk of a bad injury simply because you are too proud to accept that you cannot do it. Look at the size of the job and take an honest assessment of whether or not you have what it takes to be able to move it.
