Don’t Buy Sets

Although it may be tempting to buy sets, you probably shouldn’t do it. Yes, sets usually match very well together, and you do want your furniture to match. However, sets don’t take the size of your room into consideration. You may want a coffee table for your living room and see that there are many other pieces in the set that you can get to match. However, there is no guarantee that all the pieces in the set will fit into your room, meaning your living room may look packed and crowded. Furthermore, there’s no reason for you to buy a piece in a set if you have no use for it other than “it matches”. If you want to decorate a room, mix and match pieces in a way that flows and ties together. Don’t simply go out and buy a cookie-cutter set.

Get Rid Of Some Of Your Old Furniture

Regardless of whether you’ve owned a home in the past or just rented an apartment, you likely will fall into the temptation of bringing some of your old furniture or belongings to your new place. While there is nothing wrong with bringing in some of your old furniture to your new place, that doesn’t mean you should move it all in. There’s no guarantee that your old furniture will flow with your new home, or that it will even physically fit in your new home’s rooms. Your new home should be exactly what the name implies, new. You should let go of the past and get rid of the majority of your old furniture pieces. Keep your favorites and the pieces that are sentimental to you, but the rest should be a clean slate for your new home.

Use Natural Light More

One of the best and easiest ways to make a room look and feel livelier is to use more natural light in your home. Natural light can be a great way to make a room appear brighter and more welcoming, features that can greatly improve the overall quality of the room. There are many ways you can add more natural light to your room. Drastic changes like replacing windows or installing skylights can be great ways to let in more light. However, if you’re not ready for that big of a commitment you could always do something small like changing your curtains to a fabric that will let more light in. Regardless of how you go about it, there’s no denying that letting in more natural light can be a great design choice.

Use A Colored Wall To Blend The Room Together

Furniture and lighting are very important for decorating a room, but so are the walls and the color you decide to paint them. You could go with something bland like your stereotypical white paint, or you could spruce things up a bit and use a much more exciting color. Find a color that fits your room and matches with the rest of the furniture and you’ll be amazed at what it can do. A freshly painted wall can go a long way in putting the finishing touches on a room and blending the whole room together.

Go Thrift Shopping

When buying furniture for a new home, it’s easy to fall into the trap of buying exclusively brand new furniture. Not only is this extremely expensive, but it could also greatly limit your design choices. Try looking at local thrift stores or bargain shops to find furniture that is still in usable condition. Lots of time this furniture is cheaper even if repairs or a few touch-ups need to be made. These bargain pieces can add an antique flair to your room and can really complete a room. Finally, these pieces can allow you to save room for your decorating budget, allowing you to explore new options for decorating your room that wouldn’t be available if you exclusively bought new furniture.
