Longer nights and colder weather means people tend to spend more time in bed during winter. There is nothing better than snuggling up in bed on a cold winter night after you’ve had a tiring day at work. But if your mattress is old and worn, you might have trouble feeling rested even though you get a few more hours of sleep.

So does that mean that winter is the perfect time to switch to a new mattress? Well it really depends on your individual situation, however there are a few reasons why winter might be a great season to consider buying a new mattress.

Why Is Winter a Good Time Get a New Mattress?

More Time in Bed

As we already mentioned on average people spend a lot more time in bed during the colder months. Naturally you want to make this time as comfortable. In addition, though due to the early sunsets and less sunlight during the day your body naturally produces more of the sleep hormone melatonin in winter. This is what make you feel sleepier and more tired, so it’s even more essential to get a good night’s sleep to feel more rested during the day.

Seasonal Sales

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day and more, winter is usually the season of sales which means you can get great deals on mattresses, duvets, mattress toppers and all other sorts of other furniture for your bedroom. So you might easily find yourself splurging on a nicer mattress that would normally be out of your budget because it’s on sale.

Time Off Work

Using leftover days off from work, taking some time off around the holidays, and with the weather being too cold to exercise outside or do social activities after work people generally have more free time during winter, which means more time to shop around. When purchasing something like a mattress that will last you for the next few years you want to make the right choice, so you want to take your time deciding and looking at different options.

How to Tell Your Mattress Needs Replacing?

Change Your Mattress

Mattresses are generally durable and only need replacing after around 6 to 10 years. You might be thinking your mattress doesn’t need to be replaced yet, but there are some clearly noticeable signs that your mattress has ran its course and you should start looking for a new one.

  • If your mattress is starting to sag, it’s a pretty obvious sign that it’s due for replacement. A good mattress should bounce back to its original, flat appearance after you get up.
  • Another sign that is hard to miss is noises such as squeaking or screeching metal sounds coming from the coils inside the mattress.
  • Waking up with pain in your neck, shoulders or back might be another hint that your mattress needs replacing, because it’s not as supportive and comfortable as it used to be.
  • Are you tossing and turning all night not being able to fall asleep? It could be yet another telling sign that your mattress has lost its comfort.
  • It might not be pleasant to consider but your mattress can just start to smell over time due to mildew, mould and fungi building up inside it. If your mattress smells of must then it might be time to get rid of it.

Advice for Choosing A New Mattress

Change Your Mattress

There is no specifically winter mattresses or summer mattresses so when you’re choosing a new mattress you have to consider your year-around comfort. Generally there are a few things you have to keep in mind when making your choice.

  • Ensure you are getting the right size mattress for your bed. Bed frames normally come in a few standard sizes like single, double or king so make sure you measure yours and get the correct size mattress to match it.
  • Take into consideration what kind of sleeper you are, as there are many different types of mattresses to suit different types of sleepers. This particularly applies to people who sleep on their side or their front. If this is you then perhaps you should look into memory foam or latex mattresses
  • Think about your allergies if you have any. If you’re particularly allergic to dust or have asthma you’d want to get a hypoallergic mattress that won’t trigger your allergies overnight so you can get a good night’s rest.
  • Consider the firmness of your mattress. Mattresses come in a few levels of firmness from soft to firmest. Some people prefer their mattress to be softer while others like firmer mattresses, whatever your case is there’s plenty of options.
  • Ask for help if you need to! Choosing mattress can be particularly tricky if you don’t have experience in mattress shopping. If you’re not sure which mattress is best for you it’s always best to consult a professional to make good choices for guest bedroom mattress.
